How to Brand Your Outdoor Summer Event
To brand an outdoor event, cover four places: the approach, the entrance, the perimeter and your own space. Use weatherproof flags, fence and barrier covers, banners and a branded shelter, and keep the same look on all of them. Every display should carry the same name, colours and short message, so people know whose event they're at from the car park to the exit.
In Ireland, the weather affects every choice. Our advice is to pick materials for wind and rain first, then look for hardware you can reuse next season. Our outdoor displays are a good place to start.
Where to put outdoor event branding, zone by zone
Treat the site as a set of zones and decide what each one needs to do. Flags and gazebo roofs work at height and are seen right across a field. Barriers, banners and pull ups work at eye level and are read up close. Most events need both.
| Zone | What to use | Outdoor tip |
|---|---|---|
| Approach and car park | Oversized flags, Monsoon frames | Height carries. Signs on the approach also reach people who aren't coming in. |
| Entrance | Feather flags, teardrop flags | Ground spikes for grass, cross bases for hard standing. |
| Fences and barriers | Heras fencing covers, crash barrier covers, mesh banners | Mesh lets wind pass through, which matters on long, exposed runs of fence. |
| Stage or pitch side | PVC banners, pitch pop ups | This is where crowds gather and cameras point, so put your biggest branding here. |
| Seating and food area | Printed deckchairs, printed cafe barriers | Mark out the space so the branding is part of the area people relax in. |
| Your stand or tent | Branded gazebos, Aerotents, printed tablecloths | Weight or stake every leg, even on a calm morning. |
| People | Backpack flags, Tyvek wristbands, printed lanyards | Staff with backpack flags take your brand wherever the crowd goes. |
Plan around your audience and the site
Start with who's coming. A young crowd at a music festival and families at a county show respond to different colours, tone and activities. If the event ran before, look through photos from previous years to see how the crowd moves and where people stop.
Then walk the site plan. Put your largest branding where crowds gather, at the stage and the entrance. Food queues are a poor spot, because people waiting to eat are watching the counter, not your banner. Put exit signage at the very end of the pathway. People leaving are still thinking about the day, and a sign at the start of the path gets missed.
The best branded space is one people actually want to be in. A seating area with your deckchairs gives people a reason to sit with your logo for half an hour, and a game or activity beside it brings in the next group. A simple giveaway helps too, as long as it's something people will use. There are more ideas in our tips for promoting your event and steps for marketing at sports events.
To keep the look consistent across every sign, fix the logo, two or three colours and one short message before anything is designed, then apply them to every piece. Keep the text large and high-contrast so it reads from a distance and in bright sun. Our post on event banner design goes into layout in more detail.
Weatherproof choices for Irish conditions
Wind is the main thing to plan for. On fences and exposed sites, we'd go with mesh every time, because the perforations let wind through instead of turning the banner into a sail. Solid PVC is laminated and waterproof and is the right choice for sheltered walls, stage fronts and anything framed. If you're unsure which suits a spot, see how to choose a banner.
Check the ground before you choose bases. Grass needs stakes or spikes, and tarmac or hard standing needs feet, cross bases or weights. That's why we often recommend the Double Sided Outdoor Pull Up Banner: it comes with ground stakes for soft ground and detachable feet for hard ground, so one stand works on either.
Rain doesn't have to be bad news. A gazebo or tent gives people shelter, and when a shower comes through they'll head straight for it. Plan for wet weather anyway: decide which displays come down first if the wind picks up, and have someone check fixings through the day. Before anything goes on a fence, barrier or roadside, get permission from the organiser, landowner or council. Our post on event marketing challenges covers more of the problems you can expect on the day.
How to brand an outdoor event on a budget
Spend first on the pieces that work hardest: flags at the entrance and the main banner or fence covers. One strong entrance does more than a dozen small signs scattered around the site.
- Buy hardware once and reprint only the graphics. Monsoon frames, interchangeable pull up banners and flag kits all work this way.
- Leave dates off the design so the same print works next year.
- Choose mesh or foldable fabrics that store well for repeat events.
- Share barrier or fence branding with sponsors and split the cost.
- Put old roller banners back to work. We have ideas for old roller banners.
After the event: dry, store and reuse
The kit lasts as long as the way it's packed away. Dry fabric flags, gazebo canopies and fence covers fully before storing them, because a canopy folded damp after a wet Sunday will smell and mark by spring. Roll PVC banners rather than folding them, fold fabric mesh loosely, and keep stakes, bases and bags with the frames they belong to. Done that way, most of your outdoor set is ready for the next event with nothing more than a new graphic.
FAQs
What is exterior event branding?
It's the same thing as outdoor event branding, applied to the outside of a venue: entrances, forecourts, fences and car parks. The same advice applies, so use height to be seen from the road and keep eye-level signs clear and readable.
How far in advance should I order outdoor event branding?
Most orders are produced and delivered within a working week, and next-day delivery is available on many orders. Order early in the busy outdoor-event season. We deliver nationwide by courier, or you can collect from Kilcoole, Co. Wicklow.
What artwork do you need for printed event branding?
Send artwork to size as a high-resolution, print-ready PDF and we'll check it before printing. If you don't have artwork, our in-house design team can design a matching set of outdoor graphics for you.
How much does outdoor event branding cost in Ireland?
It depends on size, quantity, material, hardware and delivery, so we quote per job. Tell us what you need and we'll send you a quote.
